72 χρόνια μετά τον Τσάντλερ αποκαλεί το χωριό Ritri (Hamilton, William John: Researches in Asia Minor,
Pontus, and Armenia) Όπως λέει:
Όπως αναφέρει η Süreyya Topaloğlu (Discussions on integration of rural and archaeological landscapes in Ildir/ Erythrai)
Bas-Waddington, Buresch, Boechk, Curtius.
Edmond,
Hauvette-Besnault Amédée. Inscriptions d' Érythrées et de Téos. In: Bulletin de correspondance hellénique. Volume
4, 1880. pp.
theme,
theology,
theocracy
κ..ά)
γιατί δεν το σημείωσαν αν λεγόταν έτσι;
από έξω λόγω πληθυσμών που ήρθαν εκείνη την περίοδο ή μεγαλύτερων επαφών των ντόπιων;
The name of the village Lythri is a corruption of the corresponding Erythrai of the ancient city on the ruins of which it was built. We do not know when this name was introduced. Written sources tell us that there were various variations of it.
We have a first in
the description of Erythrai by the English scholar and archaeologist Richard
Chandler in his work "Travels. Asia Minor and Greece ” in the year 1764.
As he writes:
"From Smyrna
we rented a janissary, intending to go to Erythrai, which is now corruptly
called Ritre, and it was estimated that it is eight hours away."
In his
description, Chandler says that Erythrai were corruptly called Ritre. He does
not say where he heard this name. In Smyrna or from the janissary or others
in the wider area of Erythrai? From Greeks or Turks who could not pronounce th
consonant θ
(th)? Due to the fact that many other settlements are pronounced wrong, e.g.
Chisme instead of Tsesme is not sure that he pronounced the name of the village
correctly. But this is shaken as an argument because as we will see below, it
was somewhat called that later.
The English geologist Hamilton who visited the area in 1836, ie 72 years after Chandler, calls the village Ritri (Hamilton, William John: Researches in Asia Minor, Pontus, and Armenia). As says: "We stayed here for a whole week, happily spent exploring the neighborhood and the ruins of the ancient Erythrai that are still called Ritri by the Greeks and Turks"
And below
“Other
inscriptions, also dedicated, were found near the sea shore, where the modern
village of Ritri is located at the NW foot of the Acropolis. The inhabitants
were all Greeks"
So he says about Erythrai that: are still called Ritri by the Greeks and the Turks.
As reported by
Süreyya Topaloğlu (Discussions on integration of rural and archaeological
landscapes in Ildir/ Erythrai)
Beginning from the
middle of the 19th century, researches about Erythrai increase by reserchers
like Le Bas-Waddington, Buresch, Boechk, Curtius. In the second half of the
19th century, Lamprechts and Gabler investigated the history of the site in detail,
they mention the site as Lythri, Litri or Ritri. Afterwards, Weber visited the site in the summer of 1900. Due to
the administrative regulations and divisions in Ottoman Empire, it is easier to
reach systematic data beginning from the end of the 19th century. In an annual
(salname in Turkish) of 1895-1896, Ildır village is documented as Yeldiri village
in Çeşme township (kaza in Turkish), İzmir (Smyrna) district (sancak in
Turkish),
In the Bulletin of
the Greek Correspondence vol. 4 of 1880 (Pottier Edmond, Hauvette-Besnault
Amédée. Inscriptions d 'Érythrées et de Téos. In: Bulletin de correspondance
hellénique. Volume 4, 1880. pp. 153-182;) reference is made to various
inscriptions (9 in number) found in the village. Apparently they were found just before
1880 when they were published. In all of them, the village is referred as Ritri
Summing up: In
1764 the village is known as Ritre in 1836 Ritri by Greeks and Turks. A little later (in
the second half of the 19th century) is referred as Lythri, Litri,
Ritri. At the same time in Turkish documents is called Yeldiri and
today by the Turks is called Ildiri
Question: Regarding the absence of θ (th as Rithre, Rithri, Lythri) from the names. The first two who recorded it, ie Chandler and Hamilton as English speakers whose language has θ (th as in the words thousand, thunder but also Greek as theory, theme, theology, theocracy etc.), if the village was called so, why they did not note it?
Note: The conversion of ρ (r) to λ (l) is a common phenomenon in the demotic (popular language of modern greek), for example, lichtari instead of richtari (throws) (Tzartzanos grammar 1989). But here as seems we have this transformation (from Ritri to Litri and then Lithri) from the second half of the 19th century. Was this due to outside influence, as from populations that came at that time or by greater contacts of the locals with foreigners?
