Lithri was built on the ruins of ancient Erythrai. When the inhabitants of Lithri were digging their fields were finding ancient treasures. As my mother remembered : they found a gold tray with the queen. According to one local legend (Th. Kontaras. Erythrea) :
The various precious objects in gold as crowns, bracelets and other, belonged to Queen Erythra who was digging and buried her jewels in order not to fall to the hands of Moors( Saracen pirates).
The memory of Moors was deeply engraved in the minds of the islanders and the inhabitants of the coast of Asia Minor. For centuries the Saracens were pillaging the Greek world. In the year 653 AD "Numerous hordes of Saracens and Arabs led by Muhammad son of notorious Abdullah were attacking the coast of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands. The raids were the most destructive of all those that states history. They burned and demolished four thousand Christian churches. Even, they pillaged and massacred countless islanders and did enormous damage. The feared residents were leaving their homes and found refuge elsewhere, where they could live more safely. Having as base of their operations the occupied islands of Crete and Cyprus, Saracenes for many years were attacking the islands spreading the terror " (Ambelas Timoleon D., History of Syros, 1874)
This period Erythreans were forced to leave the seaside town and were gathered on the hill of the Acropolis which was surrounded by walls For centuries, the Moors were the fear and terror of the region. The memory of these raids and looting remained in the local legend with the Queen Erythra
