Ο κος Ar. Fontrier

Honorary decree of demos [of Erythrai] for [Simos Apolloniou] and other strategoi who helped to defend city [vs. Galatians]; c. 277/5 BC; found at Erythrai: Fontrier, (Sylloge Inscriptionum Graecarum: 410)
This decree shows how some
cities in Asia Minor reacted to raids by invading Gauls in the years after 278
B.C. The generals of Erythrai were instructed to hand over money to the
invaders; no fighting is mentioned, although the decree suggests that the city
was defended by mercenaaries and also (if the text restored by Dittenberger
When Apatourios was the sacrificer {Hieropoios}, in the month
of Artemision it was resolved by
the people {of Erythrai},
as proposed by Polykritos son of Iatrokles: since the generals who held office
during the first four months of the year when Hegesagoras was sacrificer,
namely
Simos son of Apollonios
Phyrson son of Iatrokles
Athenaios son of Dionysios
Anaxikrates son of Thrasyboulos
Hekatas son of Gnotos
Pytheus son of Pytheus
Apellikon son of Peithagoras
Moironax son of Endemos
Linaios son of Herogenes
have acted nobly and honourably towards the people, and took good and appropriate care of the guarding of the city and the provision of weapons, and although many fears and dangers surrounded the city and great expense was necessary to maintain peace, throughout they kept the city and the countryside free from harm, and they took care that money was collected and paid to the barbarians with Leonnorios as instructed by the people; and [they took heed] of the money that was assigned by Athenaios to the troops that were arrayed with Hermokrates; and they took heed of the money owed to the soldiers of (?) Ptolemaios [for their provisions]; and when there was a big [shortfall] in the salaries for the mercenaries, [they gave] what was needed out of their own resources; [and they took care of the] other management . . . of those attacking . . .; [therefore it is resolved by the] people to praise the generals who held office [in the first] four months of the year when [Hegesagoras] was sacrificer and to crown [them with a golden crown], namely (as above)
[and to give them privileged seating at all] the games; and the agonothetes shall proclaim [the honours granted to them] . . . in the theatre, when . . . and [the secretary shall inscribe] this decree [on a stone stele, and] place it in the [agora]
Inscription of Erythrae. The Evangelical School of Smyrna, which continues to deal with intelligent activity with the antiquities of Asia Minor, has just published in a Smyrniote newspaper, Γ Αμάλθεια, an entry from the city of Erythrae in Ιonia. M. Ar. Fontrier, one of the Ephors of the Society; was kind enough to send us a very careful copy and a stamping of this decree. The marble is broken at the top where the names of honored magistrates were engraved in crowns; a fairly considerable fragment is missing on the right. The engraving of the letters is from a fairly good period, from the third century; reading is certain
Inscription d'Erythrae.
The autonomy of Erythrae had been recognized by Alexander and his
The eponymous was a
religious magistrate with the title of ιεροποιός. The most important college of
magistrates was that of strategoi by comparing this inscription with two other
monuments of the same city, we see that they were nine in number and that they
changed every four months; The recitals
of the decree which recall their services are, in large part, mutilated; it is
nevertheless recognized that they occupied themselves with the guard of the
city and the armaments; that they united and removed the troops whose city had
ordered the levy to repel the barbarians; that they preserved Erythrae and its
territory from all devastation; that they provided at their expense the
provisions which the mercenaries lacked. The restitution μισθοφόροις (1. 19) is
very probable.
La restitution μισθοφόροις (1. 19) est très-probable.
At this time of almost incessant wars, the cities employed mainly
mercenaries; at the time of danger, they appealed to the generosity of citizens
who subscribed for a certain sum and a certain number of soldiers. In a
fragment of subscriptions of this kind, we see some citizens donating up to 200
men
The barbarians who threatened the city could only be Galatians. After their passage in
Asia and even after the victory of Antiochus, their bands ravaged the country
for many years. If we are to believe
Titus Livy (XXXVIII, 16) the tribe of the Tolistobogians had reserved
the right to ransom Aeolia and Ionia; ,
Attalus I forced the Galatians away from the sea, and from then on
Erythrae was safe from the barbarians. The inscription would therefore be
between 274 and 230. We can relate to the same period a curious inscription
from the same city, containing the list of the sums produced by the sale of the
priesthoods during several years. In fact, we find in this list the two eponyms
of the decree; one of the strategοi Σίμος 'Απολλώνιου, the same
year he was in charge, bought the priesthood from Apollo Enagonios; another,
Έκατας Γνώτου, served as a surety for a purchaser. Perhaps the same name should
be returned in a fragment of a decree proposed by.
On
prêtrise d'Apollon Enagonios; un autre, Έκατας Γνώτου, servit
.ας

The collapse of Macedonian rule that came with the death of Ptolemy Keraunos in 280 BC. allowed Galatian groups to invade Macedonia,Thrace and especially central Greece. Two Galatian groups, in 278/277 BC, crossed into Asia Minor at the invitation of Nicodemus I of Bithynia and fought as his allies against his brother Zipoetes first and then the Seleucids. During the decade of 270 BC. Galatian forces plowed western Asia Minor, looting shrines and cities and taking hostages to ransom them. Inscriptions and other sources testify to the threat posed by the Galatians to Cyzicus, Ilion, Thyateira, Erythres, Ephesus, Priene, Miletus, Didyma and all the interior of Asia Minor as far as the Valley of Lykos (the Wolf). For the most part, Greek cities had to defend themselves as best they could. They turned, however, for protection to Seleucid Antiochus AD, who defeated the Galatians around 270 BC. in the battle of the Elephants, thus receiving the nickname Savior. Antigonus II Gonatas had already been honored as Savior in 277 BC. for his victory against the Galatians in Lysimachia of the Thracian Peninsula. Around 240 BC, Attalus I of Pergamon had succeeded in being called the same after his victory against a great Galatian power at the sources of the river Kaikos in Mysia. It is therefore obvious that to some extent the Hellenistic kings of the 3rd c. B.C. had acquired both legal status in the Greek cities of Asia Minor and acceptance by them in recognition of the protection provided to them by the Celtic "barbarians".(The Galatians in Asia Minor. Foundation of the Hellenic world)
